You’ve heard about carbon neutral but how about ‘energy positive’? That’s exactly what this brand new hotel in the Arctic Circle promises to be.
Set to open in 2023, this stunning Norway Glacier Hotel aims to lead sustainable travel trend. Combining an innovative design with out-dated materials, Hotel Svart planned to provide a blueprint for sustainable travel developments worldwide.
The astounding circular hotel floatingon stilts at the edge of a fjord close to Svartisen glacier in the Meløy area of northern Norway. It is the first property to produce more energy than it consumes. Aimed at nature lovers, the hotel is concerned about their impact on the environment. The most important consideration during the building’s design was to reduce the environmental footprint as much as possible.
While this would be of interest to eco-travellers, the hotel’s location is sure to spread its popularity to a much wider group especially the increased interest in nature-based luxury travel.
While the circular design offers guests the opportunity to enjoy panoramic views of the pristine natural landscape, the choice came after the study of solar energy. Architects looked at how solar radiation behaves relative to the mountainous setting all through the year, particularly important with very long summer days and almost no sunlight in the early winter.
The hotel’s design is sustainable and low-impact. Svart will have around 100 bedrooms, many of which will have enviable views of the fjord. There’s even a sustainable farm on site, producing ingredients for the hotel’s four restaurants.
Guests will also find an indoor-outdoor spa – think sound therapy, cry therapy and Nordic-inspired treatments – an education centre and design laboratory. It will also have two electric boats to ferry visitors around. The hotel will put on activities like ice climbing on the glacier, yoga classes in the midnight sun, wildlife-spotting, diving and fishing.
